Description:  After Vorgell the barbarian fucks himself with a unicorn horn, he ends up in a cell with Maddog, a pretty young thief. It’s lust at first sight for Vorgell—but honestly, he can’t help it. Unicorn horn is a potent aphrodisiac, and now he can’t stop thinking about sex. Luckily, Madd is one male witch who knows how to put Vorgell’s new magical body to good use when he tricks Vorgell into a kiss that helps them escape.

Vorgell may desire sex in general—and Madd in particular—but Madd has no intention of being screwed by a man twice his size. He has problems of his own, including an enchanted collar that causes him to desire his most hated enemy. He wants that collar off as soon as possible, but that requires stealing a basilisk egg from the castle they just escaped.

Drawn together by lust and magic, the two men join forces and soon find themselves up to their necks in witches, wizards, and trouble. Vorgell and Madd might just be perfect for each other, but first they have to survive long enough to find out.

Review: This was one of those random books I came across when reading someone else’s review blog, and the description was outrageous enough that I was intrigued and bought it. I’m rather glad that I did.

This little book was a bit of a surprise overall, really. It’s not very long; tightly written in an easy style that reads away very nicely. There was lots of sex, of course – how could there not be, with a blurb like that? – but not as much as you might expect from that blurb.

So, we have Vorgell, a tall, blond barbarian, built like a seven-foot god. He has come to foreign lands to kill magic-users, but when he is hungry he accidentally kills a unicorn (thinking it was a deer), eats the berries that grow all around it, and ends up so horny that he uses the unicorn’s horn to fuck himself with. It sounds rather ridiculous, but the premise is played far straighter than you might think, and it kinda works too.

It gets him into trouble, of course, and he is caught and thrown into a cell with the dark, small and pretty witch-boy Madd. For Vorgell, who will take women if no men are available but prefers his own sex, it is lust at first sight. Madd, however, has his own problems, the main one being the love-collar that was forced upon him and which makes him the devoted love-slave of the reprehensible Baron Flemgu.

The two make an odd couple. Vorgell is permanently horny due to the unicorn horn’s effect, but he is a surprisingly gentle man for all his barbarian background, and Madd brings out some hidden sides to him that are quite unexpected. Madd, on the other hand, is surly, sullen and hostile, mainly due to the fact that life has dealt him a very harsh hand and he has had little chance or reason to be otherwise. He could be very unlikeable, but to me he wasn’t.

All the sex in the book is M/M, so it’s not for everyone. Personally I have always quite liked M/M romances (much more so than F/F ones), and this one really is quite cleverly done. There were a few parts in the book where I wasn’t sure of the purpose of it (Petal the basilisk being one of them), but overall it was thoroughly enjoyable, and I’ll be checking out more books by this author.
