I’m not a fan of US hype when it comes to cartoons. A lot of the more recent American cartoons make me cringe. I grew up on Looney Tunes, Animaniacs, He-man, Transformers, Care Bears and a bunch of other things people probably don’t remember.

My brothers and family friends had an Avatar phase, and I reluctantly joined them to watch a few episodes on DVD. What can I say? I’m a sucker for goofy stories with a little action. Despite my grumbles, I came to enjoy the Avatar and ended up watching all of it.

I make a distinction between anime, animations, cartoons, comics, graphic novels and manga. This is the first time I’ve read an Avatar novel. I had fun! There’s a lot of great art, entertaining stories and a notable joke or prank in each story arc.

Most of the stories I liked are written by Johane Matte & J. Torres. My favorite colors were done by Gurihiri & Hye Jung Kim.

The first two stories about bees and water fights had me grinning from the get go! The antics of the group as they travel the world in order for Aang to learn how to master all the elements are full of humor, action and spunk.

My favorite story arcs:

“Sleep Bending” – Aahn’s not allowed to have fun dreams…ever.
“Going Home Again” – Prince Zuko has a romantic side?!?
“Monster Slayer” – Haha! You just have to see it.
“Swordbending” – Lost the fight, won the verbal heist!
“Bumi vs Toph” – BEST ONE OF ALL! Think Dragonball Z!
